We’ve tried to build a musical score into each of our documentaries which recreates the cultural dimension of the his-story it tells. Unfortunately we’ve had to offer Democracy’s Denial: Revolutions in Wilmington on this site with very little music, due to copyright issues. You can help us fix this!

Starting around 1875, Wilmington newspapers lamented African Americans’ monopoly on musical groups in the city, and called for the formation of a White brass band! Eventually white musicians did indeed form a “Kornet Kavalier Klub!” What’s especially interesting is that the Ku Klux Klan had disbanded or “gone underground” (as debated in the How the South Won the War program) around 1874, and wasn’t reborn until 1915. Yet the initials of the new White brass band deliberately referred back to that history!

Do you have ideas for music, permissions, or public domain recordings appropriate to the story of Wilmington from the Reconstruction through the coup d’etat of 1898, its “race riots” of 1968, and its reconciliation efforts of 1997 to the present day? Or best yet, do you belong to a town band or school band which could collaborate by recording authentic-sounding sounding recordings of the music? Please, contact us!
